In a perfect world, we'd all look this fabulous while traveling:
Unfortunately, in the real world, it's not so easy. Especially when you're lugging around your own luggage, standing in line at ticketing, and walking shoe-less through security.FM and I are extreme fliers - meaning, we either fly for an hour to San Francisco or Las Vegas or we fly 10+ hours to go to Europe. Not much in between. I'm definitely no expert in overseas flying but after numerous flights out of the country, I've got my routine down pat. Obviously what works for me might not work for you, but if it helps make a long and tiresome journey a little more bearable, then my job is done.
The outfit ~

James Perse dress, Line Kintwear Desiree wrap, Nine West, sandals, Chloe Paraty tote, pashmina
I never travel without a maxi dress on. Not only is it super comfortable, but it also keeps your modesty in tact when you're fidgeting in your seat. It's also loose which helps your circulation in the plane. I also make sure to throw a pashmina and an oversized cardigan in my bag. The cardigan is obviously necessary when it gets cold and I use the pashmina as a pillow or a blanket. And believe it or not, I always wear flat sandals when I travel. Not only for comfort, but I find when I do wear them, I'm not required to remove my shoes during security check and I can also easily slip them on and off in the plane. Oh, and I never wear jewelry on a flight.
Misc items: Couple of other items I have in my bag (why I always carry an oversized tote) - a pair of leggings and a pair of thick socks. I get cold easily so I'm always prepared.
On the plane ~
As soon as the plane takes off and the seat belt light turns off, I head to the restroom w/my on flight toiletries bag.
- Wash off make-up with Dove Gentle Cleansing Pillow (I usually pack 4 - 2 for the flight there and 2 for the flight back)
- Apply a thick layer of Nivea Creme on face. (I pack 3-4 of the little tins)
- Spray hair lightly with a leave in conditioner. This not only keeps my hair moisturized but it also prevents it from getting static-y. (I usually make my own - take a travel size spray bottle and add about a tsp of conditioner and fill w/water).
- Put hair in a loose braid.
During flight ~
- Make sure I change time on my watch and immediately get on the same schedule as my destination
- FM and I take Emergen-C at least 2x throughout the flight
- Drink A LOT of water - I stay away from caffeine, sodas and alcohol. However, I will have a scotch just to help me sleep.
- Go to the restroom and wash face again and brush teeth. Pat a little Nivea Creme on face.
- Take hair out of braid, flip head upside down, scrunch a little gel, and flip back up.
- Back at seat, apply make-up
- Put on jewelry. Although I don't wear any on the flight, I carry it w/me in my bag to throw on before I land.
- FM and I are never w/out Oscillococcinum when we travel. It's a homeopathic vitamin/medicine that you take when you feel like you might be coming down w/something. You have to take it before you actually get sick and it really works. Nothing's worse than being sick during or after a vacation.
- I always request the vegetarian meals when we book our flights. I'm very good about avoiding anything salty (no peanuts for me, either) and I find the vegetarian meals have more fruits and vegetables.
- If FM and I have a connecting flight, we have a special way of packing. We'll take a smaller suitcase and pack our necessities and an outfit or 2 each in there. In a larger suitcase, we'll pack our clothes and what not. We take the smaller one on the plane w/us and the larger one gets checked in. That way, if our bag gets lost, at least we'll have our necessities.
I hope you found some of this useful. Again, this is my routine and it won't work for everybody...so please share some of your tried and tested ways of surviving a long flight.
Oh, and if all else fails, throw on a pair of large, dark sunglasses and nobody will think you're anything less than fabulous. ;)
P.S. Kel, I hope you have a wonderful and safe trip...you better stay in touch or I'll come and stalk you. I know where you live. :P

I am loving her hat, that plaid stripe compliments the black hat & coat so well :)
Wow, these are great tips. I'm not too fussed about hair and makeup during long flights, but I like packing a travel-size bottle of contact solution and my contacts in their case, as well as a toothbrush and travel size tube of toothpaste. My eyes tend to get dry easily and the air in a plane cabin is always drier than usual, so this way I can wear my glasses comfortably during the flight and switch them for contacts later. Also, brushing my teeth just makes me feel so much more refreshed. :-)
What a great routine! I don't fly much, but if I did, I'd totally follow your advice :)
excellent guide!! I love the little moisturizing cream
bringing a mini version can certainly be the answer- because bringing the full sized bottles on the plane is not allowed
ive got 2 flights totaling 22 hours in two weeks..i will refer back to this
Love the outfit and tips!!

Amazing, amazing guide (: I LOVE that taupe color - it's so fabulous!

you seem to have this down pat! I'm coming back to this the next time I go overseas! I am crazy about Oscillococcinum and always keep a 3 pack in my bag. When I travel, I carry the little evian water spray too...it helps to keep me hydrated on the plane!
I love that everyone has great routines for flying. I wear what I usually wear and sleep...no wonder I look so bad when I get off the plane.
perfect outfit for traveling! great colors!!

Maxi dress. Briliant!
This is such a great post!!!! I am such a slacker when it comes to traveling and always feel and look like a p.o.s when I land, so this is so helpful Nina! I am bookmarking it! :) I hope you're doing well girl!!! XO
OMG KELLY you better come back!
Excellent tips. I wish I could afford that Chloe bag! Alas, I'll have to find a substitute.
You're fabulous as always. I will refer to these tips as soon as I fly.
yessss.. awesome posts. the heavy cream on face is such good advice.... i bet you look just as gorgeous arriving from an overseas flight!
LOL All I ever need is someone to knock me out and and a puke bag when landing, sorry but that's reality when you don't have a private jet !
So helpful! I just recently discovered how perfect a maxi dress is for traveling, but I always get sick after flying! I need to find me some Oscillococcinum!
This is a great post Nina and I am sure it took you a long time to write it. Thanks for sharing!
I've traveled overseas quite a bit but I am disaster... I dont go prepared. The thing that I always do though, is one hour before landing follow the same process as you described. This helps me feel refreshed and ready to go!
a big kiss for you nina!

So interesting to hear about the travel habits of others! I go with leggings instead of a maxi dress, but agree that jersey is the only way to fly.
Hi Nina how're you?? Have a great weekend!!
Nice travel tips :)
I've gotten to the point where I don't really care what I look like when I travel anymore...jeans and a sweatshirt are the most forgiving things, but that dress is a great idea.
Cute too!
xoxo,
Micaela
I 100% agree with your tips Nina... for me going to and from the US takes as much as 17-20 hours and at least 3 connecting flights and it's close to impossible to look fresh and fab once I reach my end-city, or the other way around. I never thought about the leave-on conditioner though, all beacause I find my hair getting overly greasy on the plane....teeheee but I will keep that in mind!
Love the jetsetting-outfit you had planned...I've never thought of a maxi dress - I get stuck in jeans and jackets...
Enjoy your weekend!
Hugs and Kisses!!! ♥
Those are some great tips! I always fly with a pashmina and usually wear leggings, tunic and boots or sandals on board. I'm constantly re-applying lip balm and moisturizing. I heard that if you put some polysporin just inside your nose, it helps keep out germs... but I think that may just be an old wives tale. I also always pack a sleep mask and ear plugs.
I love reading about other people's routine when they travel. I don't too tons of traveling myself but when I do I like to be comfortable. I am really liking the idea of wearing a maxi dress for travel. It's simple and loose but it doesn't look frumpy!
Hi Nina! I just wanted to say that you've inspired me to purchase my first ever maxi dress!! I wrote about it here and sourced you, if you don't mind: http://elleandish.wordpress.com/2009/07/22/travel-outfit-inspiration/
Thanks for the inspiration! I love your blog! :)
